the economy. now the romney memo says that mitt romney will champion manufacturing jobs and bring them back to our shores and it also says that america has lost 582,000 manufacturing jobs under the president's watch. now mitt romney clearly plans to go after the president on the jobs record, but here is the truth. president obama has the longest stretch of manufacturing job gains -- get this wait for it -- in almost two decades. since 2000 when president bush came into office, the manufacturing sector went into a steep slide, but since 2010, that slide has turned around. the president has record on manufacturing jobs since president clinton. and he noted as much during his dnc speech. >> and after a decade of decline, this country created over half a million manufacturing jobs in the last two and a half years. >> jennifer: now in polititfacts rated that statement by president clinton as true. mitt romney's own plan would cost 800,000 u.s. jobs according to the study for american progress. the corporate tax cuts would cost the u.s., according to that study, nearly $1 trillion. all right

and stick with it. the campaign, they used to be all about jobs. the romney slogan was obama isn't working. but then all of a sudden, the campaign was about obama care and the slogan was "repeal and replace." then that didn't work so romney moved on to we did build that. while republicans spent a night at their own convention talking about the new strategy, but that didn't work either. so recently they went with "are you better than off than you were four years ago?" but now they are abandoning it for national security message. they are all over the map, folks. paul ryan says the campaign has made some missteps, but it looks like the campaign just steps all over itself. if you use his campaign as an example, mitt romney isn't providing at all as a leader. here's the bottom line. they have never been on message. you can go all the way back to the republican primary debates. president obama never had the heat put on him because the republicans didn't have their act together with all their infighting and message to america. president obama and the campaign has won the summer. never be

did a good job of explaining why mitt romney is a good candidate why the republicans put out and why he's the best person to put out against president obama. they did more time talking about why the bench is strong than governor romney. he also cannot necessarily run an anybody but this guy campaign when the this guy he's talking about is the president of the united states who's now polling at 50% or higher. he understands he's not going to be able to completely veer right because he has not set his base on fire. the republican party is not heavily excited about governor romney. the only way he'll have a chance at this, particularly when you look at swing state polls, is if he's able to peel off the moderates. that's going to be a very difficult act for him to pull off. >> one of the things people are asking for is specifics. paul ryan on bloomberg tv today, this morning, in fact, still doesn't add much clarity to the tax plan. watch this. >> obviously the numbers add up. we've shown that. let's work together to establish that framework. and it's not as much as what's in the tax code
